The exceptional musician, Professor Yousef El-Mawsely

Few musical geniuses have been as influential to Nubian and Sudanese music as the outstanding Professor Yousef El-Mawsely, from Dongola in Upper Nubia (Northern Sudan), who has dedicated all his life to producing, composing, arranging, innovating, teaching and singing impressive works of art. Even while he was studying - he has acquired three Masters degrees (from Egypt and the US) and prepared a doctorate, he was always engaged with the greatest artists, mainly late Mohammed Wardy, who is considered the "Father of the Nubian song"and the greatest African singer and musician. Besides composing and arranging several songs for Wardy and other great Sudanese artists, like late Mustafa Seid Ahmed and others, Prof. Yousef El-Mawsely founded and directed several orchestras and chorales, and while he was teaching in the United States of America, he also founded the Al-Mawsili Center for Music, and created mixed Sudanese-American orchestras, and participated in various international festivals and events. His passion for music led him to teaching at Khartoum High School and the Higher Institute of Music and Theater in Sudan, and encouraging young artists. One of his most impressive works is the song "The child of the Third World", on a poem by late Layla Maghrebi, a moving message to humanity, in support of the starving children living under the oblivion, indifference and dehumanization by most of the world's community, as victims of aggression, war and invasions and environmental factors. Yousef Al-Mawsely composed and arranged the song with the Orchestra and Chorale of the Cairo Conservatory, and sings it together with Mohammed Wardy and Mustafa Seid Ahmed. Unfortunately, although it was published in Febrary 2003, shortly before the US war and occupation of Iraq, today the song is even more relevant, touching the souls in grief about the war-battered children in Palestinian Ghaza and the West Bank, in Yemen, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran and Sudan. Lately, the great musician Youssef Al-Mawsely discussed the features of Nubian music during a seminar organized by Nubiana, the cultural initiative and magazine of the Sudanese Nubian Association in the UK, and he also composed a melody for the young Nubian singer Fedwa Mohammed Othman. We encourage all Nubian artists to reach out to this marvellous master of art, who will certainly be willing and pleased to assist them and contribute to the wonderful contemporary Nubian music and song.
